Nata nel 1955 nello stato di New York, Deborah Lee Garris è il frutto dell’unione di due culture: madre coreana e padre americano. Crescere negli Stati Uniti degli anni ’50 significava affrontare discriminazioni razziali intense. “Mia madre era molto protettiva. Dovevo essere battezzata cattolica e frequentare scuole cattoliche per evitare molestie”, ci racconta con un sorriso. Deborah, conosciuta con il soprannome di “The Black Oriental” per il suo aspetto esotico, metà coreano e metà nero, è stata una pioniera, ritenuta la prima modella di origine coreana a sfilare per importanti marchi di moda. Dagli anni ’70 fino alla metà degli anni ’80, Garris, il cui nome da modella era “Chai”, è stata una modella molto richiesta e ha avuto momenti di grande successo nella sua carriera. Tra due mondi: infanzia e protezione materna

Da bambina, la sua diversità colpiva chi la circondava: pelle scura, occhi orientali, capelli ricci. “I bambini non capivano. Io sembravo un’aliena per loro”. Ma in casa la cultura coreana era viva: dai piatti tipici della tradizione, fino alla passione per la moda della madre, abile sarta che rinunciò a una carriera promettente per seguire il marito in Germania. “Mia madre era perfetta con guanti bianchi, borse e cappelli. La sua eleganza mi ha contaminato senza che me ne accorgessi”, ricorda Deborah.

Deborah Chai Garris: New York e il sogno di diventare modella

Fin da piccola, Deborah sapeva di avere un talento speciale per la moda: “Mi dicevano da piccola: ‘Sei magra, dovresti diventare una modella’. Era un sussurro che mi accompagnava sempre”. Dopo il corso alla Barbizon Modeling and Acting School di Dallas, in Texas, partì per New York con un biglietto di sola andata, anche se ero stata presa alla Texas Women’s University per studiare infermeria. “Ho comprato il mio biglietto e ho detto a mia madre: ‘Vado a New York a fare la modella quest’estate. Tornerò a settembre per l’università’. Lei era sconvolta: per una mamma coreana, dovevi fare il medico, l’avvocato o il giudice… e io volevo essere un’artista!”.

Il primo show

Il suo primo lavoro fu uno show in NYC della Simplicity Pattern Company all’Hotel Plaza, un pranzo per 600 donne, in cui indossava solo un vestito dorato: “Tremavo lungo la passerella, ma è stato l’inizio di tutto”. E tra i primi consigli discutibili delle agenzie, c’era quello di modificare il suo naso: “Volevano che fosse più piccolo e appuntito. Ho risposto: ‘Preferisco non operarmi e occuparmi solo di sfilare in passerella bene’. E grazie al cielo, ho mantenuto il mio naso coreano”.

Dalle sfide raziali alle passerelle internazionali di Deborah Chai Garris

Negli anni ’70, Garris affrontò il mondo della moda come modella di razza mista, un contesto in cui la diversità non era accettata di buon grado: “Non ero abbastanza ‘bianca’, non ero abbastanza ‘marrone’, né abbastanza ‘gialla’ o ‘rossa’. Tra i momenti più memorabili, ricorda lo show di Laura Biagiotti a Vienna in un hangar: “Dovevamo indossare i cappelli di pelle dei piloti della Seconda Guerra Mondiale. L’aeroporto era il set perfetto, tutto era così speciale”. Dopo lo show abbiamo scattato una foto con il pilota di Formula 1, Nikki Lauda. Oppure, nel 1975 il fashion show a Las Vegas per Glemby International Hair Salons, dove rappresentò il mercato afro-americano con cinque parrucchieri diversi e più di dieci uscite in passerella, e l’hair designer Walter Fontaine creò per lei la famosa acconciatura a piramide: “Ogni uscita era un’acconciatura diversa. Alla fine, ho ricevuto un’ovazione in piedi. È stato incredibile. Fu lì che diventai la “Black Oriental”.

Momenti divertenti

Poi c’erano i momenti più divertenti, come quando imparò a usare le protesi per il seno per lo swimwear di Giorgio Sant’Angelo in bikini colorato: “Mi hanno spiegato che dovevo metterli nel reggiseno e io non li avevo mai usati. Ho provato e sono tornata in showroom dicendo: ‘Ok, li ho messi’. Sono andata in passerella, alla prima giravolta la protesi è uscita completamente dal costume – tutti dietro le quinte ridevano – per fortuna girando sono riuscita a rimetterla dentro con disinvoltura. Nessuno se n’è accorto e lo show è continuato!”. Oppure quando, dopo lo show a Las Vegas, in cui fu accompagnata in Limousine al Sahara Desert Hotel: “Scorrevano fiumi di champagne e tutti si congratulavano e Walter, a un certo punto lui mi dice: ‘Chai, andiamo via’! Mi porta all’MGM Grand Hotel. Lì c’era un concerto dei ‘Jackson five’ e ho cenato insieme a Michael Jackson!”.

Deborah Chai Garris e la riscoperta delle sue radici coreane

Nonostante il successo internazionale, Deborah sentiva un vuoto culturale: “Mi sentivo esclusa dalla cultura coreana. Conoscevo la cucina e la moda, ma non conoscevo la lingua. Era come essere sorda e muta in casa mia”. Nel 2015, grazie alla sorella, iniziò a guardare film e drammi coreani: “Guardando queste serie ho capito che non ero un’aliena. Ero coreana con la pelle marrone, piangevo e reagivo come loro. Tutto ciò che avevo fatto nella mia vita era identico a loro. L’unica differenza era la pelle”.

Oggi Deborah ha deciso di riabbracciare il suo paese d’origine anche come modella over, firmando un contratto con EMA – Elite Model Agency di Seul: “Sono emozionata di tornare sulle passerelle in Corea, questa volta con l’esperienza e la consapevolezza di una vita intera”. Born in 1955 in New York State, Deborah Lee Garris is the product of two worlds: a Korean mother and an African-American father. Growing up in the United States in the 1950s meant facing intense racial discrimination. “My mother was very protective. I had to be baptized Catholic and attend Catholic schools to avoid harassment,” Deborah recalls with a smile.

Known as “The Black Oriental” for her unique look—half Korean and half African-American, Deborah was the first model of Korean descent to walk for major international luxury brands. From the 1970s to the mid-1980s, her talent made her one of the most sought-after models in New York, Milan, and beyond, leaving unforgettable marks in fashion history. KoreaME by Informa Press spoke with her in a heartfelt interview, revisiting her most emotional and amusing memories.

Between Two Worlds: Childhood, Maternal Protection, and a Passion for Fashion

As a child, her unique appearance made her stand out: dark skin, almond-shaped eyes, and straight hair. “The children didn’t understand. I looked like an alien to them,” she remembers. Yet at home, Korean culture thrived: from traditional dishes to her mother’s passion for fashion, a skilled seamstress who gave up a promising career to follow her husband to Germany. “My mother was perfect with white gloves, handbags, and hats. Her elegance rubbed off on me without me even noticing,” Deborah confides, highlighting how her mother’s sense of style shaped her own aesthetic vision.

New York and the Dream of Becoming a Model

From a young age, Deborah knew she had a special talent for fashion: “People told me when I was little, ‘You’re skinny; you should become a model.’ That whisper followed me my whole life.” After studying at the Barbizon Modeling and Acting School in Dallas, she moved to New York with a one-way ticket, even though she had been accepted at Texas Women’s University to study nursing. “I bought my ticket and told my mother, ‘I’m going to New York to model this summer. I’ll be back in September for university.’ She was shocked: for a Korean mother, you had to become a doctor, lawyer, or judge… and I wanted to be an artist!” she laughs.

Her first Show

Her first job was a fashion show in NYC for Simplicity Pattern Company at the Plaza Hotel in front of 600 women: “I was trembling before going onto the runway, but it was the beginning of everything.” Among the more unusual advice from agencies was to alter her nose: “They wanted it smaller and pointier. I said, ‘I prefer not to have surgery and just focus on walking the runway.’ And thank goodness, I kept my Korean nose.”

Overcoming Racial Challenges and International Runways

In the 1970s, Deborah navigated the fashion world as a mixed-race model, at a time when diversity was not widely accepted: “I wasn’t ‘white’ enough, not ‘brown’ enough, not ‘yellow’ or ‘red’ enough. I didn’t fit any beauty stereotypes the industry wanted.” Yet her talent opened doors to over 70 luxury brands, including Gucci, Valentino, Missoni, Jean Muir and Yves Saint Laurent.

Unforgettable Anecdotes

Among her most memorable moments was Laura Biagiotti’s show in Vienna, held in an airport hangar with WWII pilot leather caps: “The airport was the perfect set, everything felt so special.” We took photos with Nikki Lauda, Formula 1 racing car piol. In 1975, at a fashion show in Las Vegas for Glemby International Hair Salons, she represented the African-American market with five different hairstylists and over ten runway exits. Hair designer Walter Fontaine created her iconic pyramid hairstyle: “Every exit had a different hairstyle. At the finale, when I walked onto the runway, I received a standing ovation…That’s when I became the ‘Black Oriental.’’”

Fun Moments

Deborah also remembers hilarious behind-the-scenes moments: On Fashion Avenue for Giorgio Sant’Angelo, she learned to use breast prosthetics for the first time. “During my first spin, the prosthetic popped completely out! Everyone backstage was laughing. Luckily, I managed to put it back in and kept going without anyone noticing.” After that show, she was whisked away in a limousine to the Sahara Desert Hotel: “There was champagne flowing and congratulations all around. Walter Fontaine suddenly said, ‘Chai, let’s get out of here!’ and took me to the MGM Grand Hotel. There was a Jackson Five concert, and I had dinner with Michael Jackson!”

Rediscovering Her Korean Roots

Despite her international success, Deborah felt a cultural void: “I felt excluded from Korean culture. I knew the cuisine and fashion, but I didn’t know the language. It was like being deaf and mute at home.” In 2015, thanks to her sister, she began watching Korean films and dramas: “Watching these movies, I realized I wasn’t an alien. I was Korean with brown skin, crying and reacting like them. Everything I had done in life was identical to theirs. The only difference was my skin.”

Today, Deborah has decided to embrace her homeland once more as a senior-model, signing with EMA – Elite Model Agency in Seoul: “I’m thrilled to return to the runways…This time in Korea, with the experience and awareness of a lifetime.” Alex Kang, CEO of EMA, commented: “Signing Deborah Chai Garris is a dream come true. European fashion comes from history. I love Italy. The further south you go, the sunnier life is and the more open people are. I’ve found a home here, both professionally and personally. I have special friendships with Marisa Laurito and Mariagrazia Cucinotta.”

뉴욕과 모델의 꿈

“저는 티켓을 사고 어머니께 말했어요. ‘이번 여름 뉴욕에 가서 모델 일을 할 거예요. 9월에 학교로 돌아올게요.’ 한국 엄마에게는 의사, 변호사, 판사가 되어야 했는데… 저는 예술가가 되고 싶었어요!”

첫 작업은 플라자 호텔에서 열린 Simplicity Pattern Company 패션쇼였다. 600명의 여성 앞에서 단 한 벌의 금빛 드레스를 입고 무대에 섰다.
“무대 위에서 떨었지만, 이것이 모든 것의 시작이었어요.”
디자이너들의 조언 중 하나는 그녀의 코를 바꾸라는 것이었다.
“그들은 코를 더 작고 뾰족하게 만들고 싶어 했어요. 저는 ‘수술하지 않고 패션쇼에 집중하겠다’라고 말했죠. 덕분에 제 한국 코를 지킬 수 있었어요.”

1970년대, 데보라는 다양성이 제한된 패션계에서 혼혈 모델로 활동했다.

“공항이 완벽한 무대였고, 모든 것이 특별했어요.”

1975년, 라스베이거스 Glemby International 헤어 살롱 패션쇼에서는 아프리카계 미국인 시장을 대표하며 다섯 명의 헤어 디자이너와 열 번이 넘는 런웨이 출연을 소화했다. 헤어 디자이너 월터 폰테인은 그녀의 상징적인 피라미드 헤어스타일을 완성했다.
“출연마다 다른 헤어스타일이 있었고, 마지막에는 기립박수가 쏟아졌어요. 그때 저는 ‘블랙 오리엔탈’이 되었죠.”

재미있었던 순간들

조르지오 산탄젤로의 수영복 쇼에서는 처음으로 가슴 보형물을 사용했다.
“첫 회전에서 보형물이 완전히 튀어나왔어요! 무대 뒤 모두가 웃었죠. 다행히 다시 넣고 아무도 눈치채지 못했어요.”

라스베이거스 쇼 이후, 그녀는 리무진으로 사하라 데저트 호텔로 이동했다.
“샴페인이 흘러넘치고 모두가 축하했어요. 월터 폰테인이 갑자기 ‘차이, 여기서 나가자!’라고 말하더니 저를 다른 호텔로 데려갔어요. 거기서 잭슨 파이브 콘서트를 보고 마이클 잭슨과 함께 저녁을 먹었죠!”

한국 뿌리의 재발견

국제적 성공에도 불구하고, 데보라는 문화적 공허함을 느꼈다.
“한국 문화에서 소외된 느낌이었어요. 요리와 패션은 알았지만, 언어는 몰랐죠. 집에서 마치 귀머거리이자 벙어리 같았어요.”
2015년, 언니의 권유로 한국 영화와 드라마를 시청하기 시작했다.
“드라마를 보면서 제가 외계인이 아님을 깨달았어요. 저는 갈색 피부를 가진 한국인으로서 그들과 똑같이 울고 반응했어요. 인생에서 해온 모든 것이 그들과 같았죠. 유일한 차이점은 피부색이었어요.”

EMA – Elite Model Agency 서울과의 런웨이 복귀

현재 데보라는 자신의 고향에서 시니어 모델로서 다시 활동을 시작하기로 결정했다. 서울 소재 Elite Model Agency(EMA)와 계약을과 계약을 체결하며 이렇게 말했다.
“이번에는 인생 전체의 경험과 의식을 갖고 한국 런웨이에 다시 서게 되어 정말 설레요.”

다음 세대를 위한 메시지

“절대 어떤 틀에도 자신을 제한하지 마세요. 자신을 사랑하고, 즐기세요. 행복하고 즐겁다면, 관객도 그것을 느낍니다. 아름다움과 내면의 빛은 드러날 때만 빛나죠.”
